Expressive Art

S3 pupils will focus on the visual elements shape and pattern as well as understanding composition. The approach and subject matter for S3 expressive tasks will vary, however, all tasks will centre around these key visual elements. Pupils will be encouraged to make creative decisions, developing their own creativity as well as their drawing and media-handling abilities.

Pupils will engage in a wide range of practical tasks, developing their skills and understanding of a variety of media and artistic approaches. This will allow pupils to generate original ideas within their art work which will allow them to develop new skills and abilities within art and design, allowing pupil confidence to enhance within the subject as they continue to experiment and enjoy the learning that is taking place.

Whenever possible, pupils should draw from first-hand sources. Where these are not available, good quality second-hand sources are available within the department, or pupils can be encouraged to source their own. Pupils will be encouraged to choose personal themes when appropriate.

Potential cross-curricular projects (IDL) with other subjects will take place whenever possible. This will promote cross curricular links across subjects and promote pupil learning as barriers between subjects are broken down.

Design

S3 pupils will engage in design activities which will also link to the key visual elements of shape and pattern. Design projects will all follow a three-stage process of research and investigation, development and solution, giving pupils an understanding of the design process for progression to National qualification level.

Pupils will work through the design process in relation to a design brief; this will allow pupils the opportunity to explore personal themes within their design unit. Giving pupils the prospect to create their own imaginative and original design solutions.

Potential cross-curricular projects (IDL) with other subjects will take place whenever possible. This will promote cross curricular links across subjects and promote pupil learning as barriers between subjects are broken down.

Art & Design Studies

Pupils will study the work of a minimum of two artists and two designers as stand-alone units of work throughout S3. Additionally, the work of professional artists and designers may also be embedded as part of the practical tasks to enhance practice and deepen understanding of the techniques and processes.

Pupils will develop skills in analyse of artist and designers work, gaining confidence in discussing and writing about the work with informed judgments, allowing pupils to give their own opinion on their thoughts and feelings towards the work in question. Having this knowledge and understanding of art and design vocabulary will help to improve progression to National qualification level.
